VV De Wherevogels is an amateur football club based in Purmerend, in the Dutch province of North Holland. The club was founded on 5 November 1980 at the request of the municipality, which needed a permanent club to justify building a new sports complex. A group of referees from the Waterland Referee Association took the initiative and named the club “De Wherevogels”, inspired by the Where river that once flowed through Purmerend.
In its early years, the club had no home ground and relied on hospitality from local clubs such as Purmersteijn and FC Purmerend. During the 1981/1982 season, De Wherevogels competed in the Third Division C. Despite a rough start, they achieved their first victory on October 11, 1981, winning 4–3 against HTG. With dedication and enthusiasm, membership grew from 67 to 120 within a year.
In 1983, the new facility Sportpark Westerweg was officially opened and remains the club’s home to this day. The Saturday first team last competed in the Fourth Division (KNVB West-I) during the 2020/2021 season.
After more than four decades, VV De Wherevogels continues to represent sportsmanship, community spirit, and local pride in Purmerend.
